SK Telecom Launches AI Simultaneous Korean-Vietnamese Interpretation Solution

South Korea’s leading telecommunications company has launched an AI-based multilingual translation & interpretation solution called “TransTalker” that provides real-time translation services for 13 languages, including Vietnamese. This program promises to help resolve multilingual communication issues quickly.

With the wave of modern technology, AI-based translation services are increasingly becoming a part of daily life in South Korea. Major companies such as SK Telecom and Lotte have begun deploying these advanced solutions, which bring convenience and efficiency to users.

On April 22, SK Telecom launched an AI-based multilingual translation solution called “TransTalker” that provides real-time translation services for 13 languages. Shortly thereafter, Lotte began testing the service at the information desk on the first floor of Lotte Department Store’s Avenuel Jamsil and the first floor of Lotte World Mall. Both locations receive over a thousand foreign tourists every day. Lotte reports that most users were surprised by the effectiveness and clarity of the translation service.

The technology works simply and efficiently: When a foreign tourist asks a question in his or her own language into the microphone installed in front of the transparent screen, the sentence translated into Korean is displayed on the screen of the information desk attendant and vice versa. With its ability to translate quickly and accurately, this program promises to resolve multilingual communication issues quickly.

The program provides translation services for English, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, French, German, and Russian. In addition, the program is equipped with voice recognition software, natural language processing, translation tools, and a large language model (LLM). Lotte Department Store plans to increase the number of locations using the service.

However, not everyone appreciates this convenience. Educators are concerned that AI technology could make learning and working too easy, reducing students’ diligence and creativity in writing or translation tasks. On the other hand, those who work in translation and interpretation are concerned that in 10 to 20 years, the demand for translation and interpretation will no longer be as high or as easy as it was before.

The development of AI in the translation industry is an inevitable trend. Vietnamese translators need to be proactive in adapting, and acquiring new knowledge and skills to seize opportunities and overcome challenges.
