With its captivating blend of challenges and opportunities, the localization industry has become a magnet for individuals seeking to make their mark, particularly freelance vendors. But how does one embark on this journey and carve a path towards success? Our esteemed Vendor Manager unveils some valuable insights to guide you along the way.
According to industry statistics, the global freelance vendor population stands at an impressive 650,000, and this figure is expected to surge further as advancements in information technology empower individuals to work flexibly from anywhere in the world. This diverse group encompasses linguists, translators, interpreters, and localization experts hailing from all corners of the globe. They bring to the table not only their linguistic proficiency in multiple languages but also their deep-rooted expertise in various specialized fields, making them invaluable Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). The large pool of talented individuals represents a significant force to be reckoned with.
A Vendor Manager (VM) plays a pivotal role in fostering connections, building relationships, and maintaining effective collaboration with this formidable network of vendors. As a VM, I have had the opportunity to work with outstanding vendors, some of whom are from Japan whose resumes proudly display dates of birth dating back to the 1950s! What’s even more impressive is their mastery of CAT tools, as well as their passion for singing, playing piano, and poetry. There are also young and energetic Tagalog vendors from the Philippines who have collaborated with a multitude of LSP companies across the industry and provided a diverse range of specialized services and content. They are always eager to take on new projects and can be found readily available on Skype, ready to tackle any task that comes their way.
Similarly, the Tok Pisin vendors from Papua New Guinea are wholeheartedly dedicated to preserving and revitalizing their native language. They work tirelessly not only to deliver exceptional localization services but also to contribute to the development of an English-Tok Pisin dictionary for their community’s benefit. We also have vendors specialized in rare languages, like Zomi from Myanmar, who find innovative ways to work, utilizing every precious moment of internet connectivity to stay connected even being in a refugee camp in Thailand.
Another remarkable individual is a Vietnamese interpreter who, despite being well over 60 years old, remains at the top of his game. He travels extensively for interpretation assignments, continuously honing his skills and reputation. His secret to staying fit? A refreshing morning swim. These are just a few examples of the many exceptional individuals I have worked with as a Vendor Managers. Upon joining Dr.Localize as a vendor, they not only become valued members of our team but also forge friendships with the HR and PMC teams. In fact, many of our vendors have visited our Hanoi office in person, strengthening the bonds that transcend the virtual realm.
So, how does a VM find these “gem” vendors? Just like other industries, localization has its dedicated online communities and professional forums, such as Proz.com, TranslationDirectory, TranslatorCafe, and Linguist Café. These platforms serve as hubs where both seasoned experts and newcomers to the field converge. In addition, LinkedIn, Upwork, and Freelancers offer effective job connection platforms. A vendor’s profile on these sites becomes a treasure trove of information, enabling VM to match the right person with the right project.
To increase the likelihood of getting noticed by a VM on the aforementioned platforms, follow some simple steps:
Create a detailed and comprehensive CV:
Once you have successfully passed the screening process and become an official vendor, how do you continue to impress and build a strong reputation within the industry?
We hope these insights from a VM have shed light on the exciting world of localization and empowered you to embark on your journey as a vendor, charting your own course toward a fulfilling and successful career.
